There is no denying the fact that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is gradually replacing cash transactions, and considerably changing the payment habits of most of us. Not only are these digital payments used to transfer money from a customer to merchant (P2M) but from one customer to another (P2P) as well.

Giving further impetus to this digital payment infrastructure in India, a new facility has been rolled out at ATMs to enable withdrawal of cash via UPI.

The UPI ATM acts as just a regular ATM, and charges may be applied beyond the allowed free usage limit. It is worth noting here that the UPI ATM is currently supported on the BHIM UPI app, however, it will soon be rolled out for the users of other digital payment apps such as PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm.

To understand the process of withdrawing cash on a UPI ATM, you can follow the following steps:

Steps to follow to withdraw cash at a UPI ATM

I. First of all, click the ‘UPI cardless cash’ message that is displayed on the screen of the ATM.

II. The ATM screen now gives the option of withdrawing cash among the pre-defined options of 100, 500, 1,000, 2,000 or 5,000. Else, you can press ‘other amount’.

III. Upon clicking the amount you want to withdraw; the ATM screen displays the QR code that needs to be scanned by using the UPI app on your mobile phone.

IV. Now, you need to open the BHIM app on your phone and click the ‘scan QR’ button.

V. In the next step, you need to select the bank account and click ‘confirm’.

VI. The app will now flash a message ‘confirm to withdraw cash’ before proceeding. The message is an indication that the proposed UPI transaction is not a cashless (P2P or P2M) transaction. Instead, it is meant to facilitate withdrawal of cash.

So, to proceed, you need to click this message.

VII. Now you can enter your PIN on the BHIM app to finalise the transaction. Following this, you will see a confirmation message on your phone screen.

VIII. Back to the ATM screen, the transaction will be shown to have been processed and the cash of equivalent amount gets ejected in the cash tray.
